OK 1999, Posh & Becks wedding
Nominated by Catherine Westwood, editor, Wedding:
The OK! cover of David and Victoria Beckham's 1999 wedding showcases two cultural icons. They were both at the peak of their popularity and careers – and the public just couldn't get enough of them. It also revealed 'real' people could make it big and get paid millions for pictures of their wedding – and in doing so, set the benchmark for future celebrity nuptials. Since this cover, the Beckhams have become a brand - a true sign of our celebrity-obsessed times. Nine years ago, when this cover hit the newsstands, OK! tapped into the UK's desire to feel involved in the lives of the rich and famous. It provided the entire British public with a front row seat at a very personal event, which was glittering with stars. It was a snapshot into the lives of the privileged few – for a couple of quid – and everyone had to see it and have an opinion.
This cover should win because it is a showcase of all that is good – and occasionally – bad about Britain and its unique magazines. It reveals the staggering success of ordinary folk 'made good' – which the British love. And in contrast, it satisfies our inherent national nosiness, and need to compare and contrast with celebrities. In short, it's the perfect, best-selling mix any magazine could offer.
